Fort Foote was built during the Civil War, beginning in 1863 and continuing until the war ended in 1865. It was occupied by the army until 1878. Unlike the other forts built for the defense of Washington during the war, this fort, on a bluff high above the Potomac River was built to defend against a Confederate naval force sailing up the river to shell Washington.
